Microdermabrasion
Minor facial imperfections are expected as we mature. Age spots can result from excessive sun exposure, and the natural aging process causes fine lines and wrinkles. Dust and pollutants get stuck in pores, making excess oils prominent. These imperfections are common for everyone. Despite this, imperfections can be mitigated and virtually eliminated with microdermabrasion, a cosmetically simple procedure that provides advanced results.
Microdermabrasion is offered at Terrasse Aesthetic Surgery as an effective treatment that has the potential to treat an array of mild cosmetic concerns in one short session. If you’re a resident of the Chicago region struggling with a cosmetic issue, perhaps microdermabrasion is meant for you. Please give us a call at 847-234-2400 or visit our contact page to schedule a consultation with one of our providers.
What Is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a unique treatment that involves spraying a stream of tiny medical-grade aluminum oxide crystals on your skin to remove the top layer of damaged and dead skin cells. The system used for microdermabrasion is on a closed loop, so the crystals are sprayed and vacuumed from the skin simultaneously, as are all the unwanted skin cells. The procedure is noninvasive and doesn’t rely on harsh chemicals, making it a naturally invigorating skin treatment. It is an excellent alternative if you’re wary of chemical peels or can be performed in conjunction with a chemical peel to further results. After the top layer of skin has been thoroughly sprayed, you’re left with a brighter, more even complexion.
Who Makes the Ideal Microdermabrasion Candidate?
Microdermabrasion is a suitable treatment for men and women of any skin tone. However, the treatment isn’t recommended if you have rosacea or visible blood vessels because it causes facial redness, worsening the conditions potentially. You should also avoid the treatment if you have cystic acne. The treatment is ideal if you have mild skin imperfections. Serious cosmetic concerns, such as deep wrinkles, scars, large dark spots or sagging skin, should be dealt with more extensive treatment. One of our providers can help gauge if microdermabrasion is right for you during an initial consultation. Our aestheticians may recommend alternative treatments based on your needs, desires and skin type.
Microdermabrasion is effective for the following imperfections:
Enlarged pores
Fine lines and wrinkles
Sunspots and age spots
Melasma
Stretch marks
Whitehead and blackheads
Mild acne and acne scars
Dull complexion

Our provider will cleanse and steam your skin of any dirt and debris before beginning your microdermabrasion treatment. Once prepared, you’ll be given goggles to protect your eyes from the consistent flow of crystals. The provider activates the microdermabrasion system. A handheld device is then passed along your skin in a counterclockwise direction. The crystals contact your skin and buff the outer layers of any excess dead and damaged skin cells. The vacuum simultaneously suctions, placing the crystals and unwanted skin cells into a receptacle connected to the system. Microdermabrasion is a generally tolerable exfoliating procedure. You may experience a slight tingling sensation. Once the process is complete, our provider may cleanse your face again, and a hydrating cream may be applied to mitigate any discomfort.
Microdermabrasion Recovery and Results
You’ll notice results immediately after your microdermabrasion treatment. Your skin will be softer and more vibrant, supple and glowing. You may leave our offices with your face appearing a mild pink, but this is a minor side effect that goes away shortly. One session of microdermabrasion will leave your skin looking fantastic, but you will be recommended to have several to attain optimal results. Our providers suggest five to 12 sessions spaced two to four weeks apart. Microdermabrasion maintenance treatments can also be scheduled at regular intervals to sustain your fresh, glowing look.
