Juvéderm

Collagen loss is one of the primary catalysts of facial aging. Collagen is a protein produced naturally in the body that has many functions, including maintaining bone strength, relieving joint pain and supporting the dermal structure. This substance is plentiful in our younger years, giving a smooth and supple look to the skin. As we age, however, collagen levels diminish, leading to skin laxity, loss of volume in the lips and the formation of wrinkles.

Women and men are increasingly seeking simple solutions to these unwanted signs of aging. Dermal fillers work with your skin’s natural chemistry to enhance volume and erase wrinkles without incisions or anesthesia. At Terrasse Aesthetic Surgery, we offer a comprehensive menu of injectable fillers that are designed to treat different concerns and needs. The Juvéderm® line of dermal fillers includes a broad range of formulations that can enhance your natural features and shave years off your appearance.

Dr. Anthony Terrasse is a skilled plastic surgeon who has a passion for making a positive difference in his patients’ lives. If you’re interested in learning more about the Juvéderm® family of dermal fillers, please give us a call at 847-234-2400 or visit our contact page.

What Is Juvéderm®?

Juvéderm® is a collection of dermal fillers that are made with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar found naturally in the body. Its functions include maintaining the youthfulness of the skin by increasing firmness, elasticity and hydration. Like collagen, the production of hyaluronic acid gradually decreases as we age, giving rise to wrinkles, fine lines, skin laxity and dehydration. Juvéderm® raises hyaluronic acid levels in the skin and also works to stimulate collagen production, which further enhances the skin’s strength and suppleness.

The Juvéderm® family of FDA-approved fillers is designed to address a variety of aging and skin concerns. Each Juvéderm® product possesses a different density and texture, which allows providers to tailor treatments to their patients’ specific needs and goals. When Juvéderm® is injected into the skin, it adds volume to the treated area, which helps fill out wrinkles and improves facial contours.

Juvéderm® is one of several dermal fillers available at Terrasse Aesthetic Surgery. We also carry Restylane® products, Radiesse®, Belotero Balance® and Sculptra® Aesthetic. Dr. Terrasse will review each of these options with you in an initial consultation to ensure you receive the right dermal filler for your needs.

How Do Dermal Fillers Differ From Neuromodulators?

We develop two different types of wrinkles over time. Dynamic wrinkles appear as a result of repetitive muscle movement. When muscles contract to make facial expressions, the skin over those muscles stretches and compresses to accommodate, forming creases. The creases are temporary at first and fade when the muscle relaxes. However, over a lifetime of making the same expressions to show joy, sadness, worry and surprise, the creases become deeply ingrained. The most common dynamic wrinkles include forehead lines, crow’s feet or frown lines between the eyebrows.

Neuromodulators are used to treat dynamic wrinkles. Several products fall into this category, but the most well-known is Botox®. Neuromodulators temporarily prevent expression lines from forming by inhibiting muscle contractions. This treatment softens the look of existing wrinkles and prevents the development of new wrinkles by relaxing the underlying source of facial movement. Botox® and other neuromodulators can also be used to subtly tighten and lift areas of the face to create a natural, flatting facial composition.

The second type of facial lines are static wrinkles. Rather than muscle movement, these lines are caused by gravity, environmental damage, the loss of fat and collagen, and the subsequent loss of skin elasticity. Static wrinkles are visible regardless of muscle action. If untreated, dynamic wrinkles may eventually become static, meaning they are present even with the face at rest. Nasolabial folds and marionette lines are examples of static lines.

Dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm®, are used to treat static wrinkles. Filler can be strategically injected into volume-deficient areas to smooth out lines, add contour and definition to the face, and provide a light lift to sagging skin. Dermal fillers are also popularly used to augment the lips and reduce dark hollows under the eyes.

Dermal fillers and neuromodulators are often used in conjunction with each other because they treat complementary concerns. During your initial consultation with Dr. Terrasse about Juvéderm®, he may recommend including other injectables in your treatment plan for more comprehensive rejuvenation.

The Different Types of Juvéderm®

Each Juvéderm® dermal filler contains hyaluronic acid but varies in its consistency and formula. This variety means your Juvéderm® treatment can be tailored to your needs and desired results. Dr. Terrasse will examine your areas of concern and discuss your cosmetic goals to determine which filler or fillers from the Juvéderm® family will be most beneficial. Your options at Terrasse Aesthetic Surgery include:

Juvéderm® Volbella: Juvéderm® Volbella is ideal for creating subtle changes. Volbella is FDA-approved for treating lines found near the lips, often referred to as “lipstick lines” or “smoker lines.” Volbella is also used to add volume to the lips and define the lip borders in a lip enhancement procedure.

Juvéderm® Vollure: Juvéderm® Vollure has a thicker consistency than Volbella and consists of molecules that absorb more slowly into the body. Vollure is typically used for treating moderate to severe wrinkles such as nasolabial folds, which are deep lines that run from the nose to the mouth. Results of a Vollure treatment typically last around 18 months.

Juvéderm® Voluma: Juvéderm® Voluma has a thick and sticky consistency. Because of its texture, Voluma is well-suited to correcting volume loss in the mid-face region that can give the face a hollow, aged appearance. Voluma’s thick texture is also ideal for contouring the cheeks and jawline. Results may last for up to two years.

Juvéderm® Ultra Plus: Juvéderm® Ultra Plus is one of the most versatile members of the Juvéderm® family. Ultra Plus is thicker than its sister filler, Juvéderm® Ultra, which makes it a good choice for correcting more severe facial lines found around the nose, cheeks and mouth. This dermal filler is sometimes used to perform a “liquid facelift” by reshaping and sculpting facial contours.

The Juvéderm® Procedure

After deciding which dermal filler from the Juvéderm® family is most appropriate for you, Dr. Terrasse will determine the optimal areas for injection and the number of doses that will be needed to achieve your desired outcome. No matter which Juvéderm® product is chosen, the session should not last for more than a few minutes.

The treatment process for all injectable dermal fillers is generally the same. Dr. Terrasse will use a fine needle or a cannula to administer Juvéderm® into the lines or hollow areas of the face. Multiple injections will be done to ensure a smooth, even result. While the idea of needles in your face may seem unappealing, the lidocaine in Juvéderm® numbs the most painful sensations, so there’s minimal discomfort. A small ice pack placed on the area(s) before and after the procedure reduces discomfort further and constricts the small blood vessels in the area to minimize bruising.

Juvéderm® Recovery and Results

Juvéderm® injections do not require any downtime. In many cases, patients resume daily activities without any visible signs that a cosmetic procedure was just performed. Some mild bruising, swelling or tenderness may develop around the injection sites, but these effects typically subside within hours after the procedure. You will see some positive improvement immediately after your treatment. Results will continue to improve in the ensuing days as the product diffuses and evens out in the treated area.

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are temporary and will gradually be absorbed by your body. How long the benefits of your procedure last depends on which Juvéderm® filler is used, how quickly your body metabolizes the product, the number of injections you receive and the location of the injections. Juvéderm® products can last anywhere from a few months to a couple of years. Scheduling regular appointments with Dr. Terrasse will ensure your rejuvenated appearance continues indefinitely.
