There is much to love about growing older. The passing years bring wisdom and maturity, but they can also take a toll on your confidence in your appearance. Over time, your body produces less collagen and you may experience a natural loss of fat in your face and hands. It can be difficult — or even impossible — to disguise these signs of aging when they occur in such prominent places. Together, these changes can make you look older than you really are and less vibrant than you feel.
Fortunately, safe, effective and minimally-invasive treatments exist to fight these symptoms. These procedures do not require incisions, stitches or general anesthesia, and many have no downtime. One such treatment is Radiesse®, an injectable dermal filler that can restore volume to areas of the face or hands affected by collagen loss and diminished fat. When injected into strategically chosen locations, Radiesse® smooths out the skin to create a healthier, more youthful look with long-lasting results.
Radiesse® is one of many dermal fillers offered at Terrasse Aesthetic Surgery. To learn more about Radiesse® and the positive impact it could have on your image and self-esteem, please give us a call at 847-234-247 or visit our contact page.
What Is Radiesse®?
Radiesse® is a dermal filler that contains synthetic microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) in a water-based gel. CaHA is made up of phosphate and calcium, which are naturally produced in the body. When injected below the surface of the skin, Radiesse® instantly adds volume to smooth out lines. This initial restoration of volume is later accompanied by a boost in collagen production triggered by the CaHA. The Radiesse® gel and CaHA microspheres are eventually absorbed into the body, but because the new collagen acts as a natural filler, the beneficial effects continue. This gives Radiesse® longer-lasting results than many other dermal fillers.
Ideal Candidates For Radiesse®
Radiesse® is safe for men and women of any skin tone or type. Radiesse® is often used by patients in the age range of 35 to 60, but younger patients may also benefit from this treatment. Ideal Radiesse® candidates are in good health and have practical expectations about how fillers can improve their looks.
Radiesse® is not recommended for those who have a history of acute allergies or anaphylactic reactions, or who are allergic to any ingredients in Radiesse®, including lidocaine. Women who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding may also be advised to delay their Radiesse® treatment until a more suitable date. During an initial consultation, Dr. Terrasse will review your medical history and treatment goals to confirm your candidacy. You are encouraged to speak with him about any concerns that may apply to you.
Radiesse® is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe wrinkles in the lower face, including the following:
- Nasolabial folds, or lines that run from the nose to the mouth
- Marionette lines, or lines that run from the mouth to the chin
- Pre-jowl folds
- Downturning at the corners of the mouth
- Chin wrinkles
Radiesse® can also be used to rejuvenate aging hands. By adding volume under the skin at the backs of the hands, Radiesse® can minimize the visibility of prominent tendons and veins and create a smoother, more youthful surface. The results are soft, natural-looking and visible immediately.
The benefits of Radiesse® include:
- Minimally-invasive procedure
- Results are evident away
- Can be performed alongside other cosmetic procedures, such as Botox®
- Stimulates collagen production
- Lasts longer than other dermal fillers
The Radiesse® Procedure
After discussing your desired results and health history, Dr. Terrasse will determine if Radiesse® is a suitable dermal filler for you. He will also identify the optimal injection sites and number of doses. During the procedure, you will take a seat and the chosen treatment area will be cleaned and sterilized. Dr. Terrasse may make markings on your skin to clearly indicate the injection sites. He will then administer Radiesse® below the surface of the skin with a fine needle and massage the area if needed to eliminate any lumps.
Most patients do not experience significant discomfort during the injection process, although some may prefer to have a topical anesthetic or ice applied for peace of mind, particularly if they have very sensitive skin. Radiesse® is FDA-approved to be combined with lidocaine, a numbing agent, for additional pain reduction. A typical injectable filler appointment lasts 30 minutes or less. Patients are allowed to resume most daily activities right away, but are advised to avoid exercise and other strenuous activities for 24 hours.

Radiesse® Recovery and Results
Radiesse® results are noticeable immediately after injection. Areas with volume deficiencies will look fuller and your skin will be visibly smoother, with fewer wrinkles, lines and folds. You may notice minor redness, swelling and bruising for several days after the treatment and your skin may feel unusually firm until the swelling goes away. These effects will fade on their own and your results should be visible to their fullest extent in one week.
Radiesse® is not a permanent procedure; however, it is clinically proven to last a year or more in many patients. The benefits of Radiesse® last longer than those of dermal fillers made with hyaluronic acid because the CaHA formula promotes collagen growth. The new collagen continues to give your skin a taut, smooth and youthful look after the Radiesse® itself is metabolized. Many patients choose to have annual maintenance treatments to maintain their results.
