What Is Dysport®?

Like Botox, Dysport® is a neuromodulator formulated with a type of botulinum toxin type A. Botulinum toxin is a naturally occurring protein that can interrupt the nerve signals that tell your muscles to contract. When it is injected into an overactive muscle, it temporarily limits muscle movement and permits the skin over the muscle to relax. Dysport® differs from other neuromodulators because it contains smaller particles of the neurotoxin, allowing for its effects to take hold quicker. Dysport® is FDA-approved to minimize frown lines and deep wrinkles between the brows. It is also routinely used to treat other facial wrinkles, such as crow’s feet and horizontal forehead creases.

Dysport® is specifically intended to treat lines that are caused by excessive muscle movement. These lines, also known as “dynamic” or “active” wrinkles, occur when repeated facial movements form grooves in the skin that may eventually be visible even when the face is relaxed. Active wrinkles appear in very mobile areas, like the forehead, which move when you squint, smile or frown. Dysport® may not be the best option if your wrinkles are due to collagen loss or sun damage. These lines are referred to as “static” or “passive” and are more effectively corrected with dermal fillers.

The Dysport® Procedure

During an initial consultation, Dr. Terrasse will examine your areas of concern and discuss the kind of results you are hoping for. This will help him choose the right amounts and placements for your injections to ensure that wrinkles are reduced while your face retains natural mobility. If he determines that Dysport® is not right for you, Dr. Terrasse may recommend another neuromodulator or a dermal filler that can help you reach your goals.

A Dysport® treatment consists of a series of tiny injections, placed carefully around your face in targeted locations. Dr. Terrasse may ask you to scrunch your face or make expressions so he can identify your most visible lines and determine the optimal injection sites. After your face is cleansed, the injections will begin. Dr. Terrasse will use an ultra-fine needle to administer small doses of Dysport® directly into the facial muscles. You may feel a small pinching sensation, but overall treatment with Dysport® is relatively painless. A numbing agent can be applied before the injections if you are concerned about discomfort. The whole treatment typically takes less than 30 minutes.

Dysport® Recovery and Results

Dysport® requires no downtime. You can go home immediately after an injection session and return to normal activities. You may notice some redness or swelling in the treated area, but these effects are mild and temporary. Other potential side effects of Dysport® include headache, nausea, sore throat or an allergic reaction. Dr. Terrasse will make sure you understand the risks and benefits of Dysport® before the procedure.

You’ll see the results of your Dysport® treatment emerge over the first week after your appointment. As the botulinum toxin takes effect, your facial muscles will slowly relax and the creases in your skin will soften. Dysport® results typically last three to four months before muscle movement gradually returns and additional injections are required to maintain your youthful appearance.
