Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is the general term for a surgical procedure that can enhance your nasal appearance by reshaping, resizing and modifying its contours, and in some situations, also improving functional issues. By removing tissue, adding grafts, rearranging cartilage and skin, or the careful placement of internal sutures, your nose can be successfully modified to be in better harmony with the rest of your face. No matter the technique, in the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Terrasse, the result is a refined, more proportional nose and improved breathing function.

Is Rhinoplasty Right for You?

Rhinoplasty is usually performed if you are bothered by the appearance of your nose due to asymmetry or deformity, as well as concerns following an injury, or if you need to correct breathing problems. Some of the most prevalent issues that patients wish to correct include:

  • A nose that is out of proportion to your face
  • A bulbous, drooping, hooked or overly upturned nose
  • Dents or bumps on the bridge of your nose
  • A crooked nasal bridge, usually due to injury or genetics
  • A nose that is overly wide or flattened
  • Enlarged or asymmetrical nostrils
  • Deviated nasal septum or hypertrophied nasal turbinates, resulting in airway obstruction and impaired breathing

Nearly 40,000 rhinoplasty surgeries were performed in the U.S. in 2017, so if you have any of the above concerns, you are not alone. Dr. Terrasse will use his considerable skill and experience to address and repair the problems, leaving you with a natural looking nose that complements your facial features.

  • Traditional Rhinoplasty – A traditional rhinoplasty is most commonly used to improve the shape or proportions of the nose, bringing it into balance and alignment with the rest of your facial structure. It is also used to correct nasal deformities, rebuild nasal passages to correct breathing issues, or repair the appearance and/or function of your nose after an injury.
  • Revision Rhinoplasty – Not all rhinoplasty procedures provide the results you desire, which is where revision rhinoplasty comes in. Used to alter the undesirable results of a previous nasal procedure, revision rhinoplasty works to correct these issues as much as possible. Revision rhinoplasty can be a very complex procedure, as it depends on the amount of scar tissue present as well as the condition of your original nasal structure. The risk of needing revision rhinoplasty is reduced significantly by seeing an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon for your original surgery, so it is essential that you perform your due diligence when choosing your rhinoplasty surgeon.
  • Septoplasty – This component of rhinoplasty procedure specifically focuses on
correcting a deviated septum. It is the procedure most commonly prescribed for patients who
have difficulty breathing through one or both of their nostrils because of internal anatomic
irregularities. Your consultation with Dr. Terrasse will help determine if a septoplasty will
remedy your breathing issues, or if your symptoms are caused by other problems, such as a
nasal valve collapse or other conditions that will need to be addressed by a functional
rhinoplasty. Unlike other forms of rhinoplasty, septoplasty is often covered by insurance.
  • Functional Rhinoplasty – Typically used to improve breathing problems caused by congenital or developmental issues, as well as trauma. A broken nose can adversely affect your breathing, and sometimes plastic surgery is required to fix the damage and restore proper function. Functional rhinoplasty often involves widening or providing support to the nasal valves, which may collapse when damaged.
  • Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty – An Increasingly popular procedure, this technique utilizes some of the same FDA approved fillers to reshape and augment areas of the nose by injection techniques that are safe and modified for nasal anatomy concerns. The filler material used most commonly is a form of hyaluronic acid that is long lasting and reversible if needed. This office procedure requires minimal down time and no anesthesia but is not for every type of nasal reshaping.

Depending on the type of rhinoplasty you choose and the level of correction needed, Dr. Terrasse will utilize one of two techniques during your surgery. Closed rhinoplasty uses incisions hidden inside your nose, while open rhinoplasty also involves a small incision made across the columella, or the skin between your nostrils. Both techniques are equally effective, leaving you with both improved function and proportion.

Rhinoplasty Surgery

During your initial consultation, Dr. Terrasse will carefully examine your nose, and offer recommendations for the best course of action. Sometimes a CT scan will be recommended to better document internal abnormalities thoroughly. While it is important that you receive the results you want, you must also keep in mind that it is also important to have realistic goals. It is essential that your nose matches the existing proportions of your face, so Dr. Terrasse will work with you to ensure that your individual goals are developed based on your desires as well as your anatomy, ethnicity, and gender identity.

Recovery and Results

Following your surgery, it will be crucial that you follow Dr. Terrasse’s instructions for a successful recovery. You will most likely have a splint on the inside or outside of your nose, a soft dressing inside your nose, and possibly a gauze pad beneath your nose. It may seem inconvenient to wear a splint or dressing for a short period, but it is crucial to support and protect the delicate new structures of your nose as it heals. You will need to rest and keep your activity to a minimum during these initial weeks, and it will be a couple of months before you can get back to any high impact exercise. Dr. Terrasse will advise you of your recovery timeline before your surgery, and modify it as necessary during follow-up appointments post-surgery.

You will experience swelling and bruising around your nose and eyes for the first couple of weeks after surgery, but they will eventually subside. While you will notice some immediate results, it takes a while for your nose to gradually settle into its new shape. It can take up to a year for all of the swelling to subside completely, and for your final results to be completely visible. Once your nose has completely healed, you will enjoy the new contour and increased functionality for years to come.

If the appearance of your nose is negatively affecting your confidence, or you suffer from problems due to a deviated septum or other structural issues, a rhinoplasty at Terrasse Aesthetic Surgery may be the answer. Call us today at 847-234-2400 to schedule an appointment for a consultation.
