Eyelid Lift

The skin around your eyes is thinner than on any other part of your body, and as a result, it is easily stretched and damaged. Partly because of years of rubbing your eyes and squinting, and partly because of the delicate skin around the eye, this area seems to age more rapidly than other facial skin. Over time, exposure to the sun, gravity, and loss of elasticity due to age causes the skin around the eyes to sag, creating droopy eyelids and bags under your eyes.

An eye lift (or blepharoplasty) can rejuvenate the skin and soft tissue around the eyes, giving you a more rested, refreshed, and youthful appearance. Eyelid surgery can remove or reposition excess fat and drooping skin, eliminate bags, and tighten skin, restoring facial harmony. Fillers and fat grafting may also be used to diminish hollow areas below the eyes.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is surgery to repair and lift drooping eyelids, as well as reduce and sometimes eliminate darker, bulgy, or indented circles under your eyes. With age, not only does the delicate skin around your eyes begin to stretch, but the muscles that support your lids begin to weaken. The result is the increasing prominence of fat that can cause more drooping and permanent bags under your eyes.

Not only do sagging eyelids make you look older, but they can also cause functional problems. If your skin is hanging over the edges of your eyelids, it can affect your peripheral vision. If your lower lids are severely drooping, enough so that the white of your eye below the iris is always exposed, this can cause dryness and irritation in the eyes. An eye lift diminishes or eliminates these vision problems while making your eyes look younger and more alert.

Am I a Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty can be performed on your upper lids, lower lids, or both. You may want to explore an eye lift as an option for you if you experience:

  • Sagging or drooping upper or lower eyelids
  • Excess skin on your upper lids that interfere with your vision or make you look tired or disinterested
  • Fatty deposits that appear as puffy bags under your eyes
  • Excess skin on your lower eyelids

Dr. Terrasse can examine your eyes and determine if you need an upper eyelid lift, a lower eyelid lift, or both. This procedure can be performed alone, or in conjunction with other procedures, such as a facelift or brow lift.

Blepharoplasty Procedure

An eye lift is an outpatient procedure performed using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. For an upper eyelid lift, Dr. Terrasse uses an incision placed in the natural crease of the eyelid. This allows him to remove excess skin and tighten the muscles, as well as reposition or remove fatty deposits. For a lower eyelid lift, the incision is placed just below your lash line, and Dr. Terrasse can then remove excess skin and fatty deposits. The incisions used in both procedures are carefully done and designed so that the scars are hidden within the natural folds of your eyelid. In some cases, excess fat can be removed from the lower eyelid through a completely hidden incision on the inside of the lid.

Results and Recovery

Dr. Terrasse will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your eyes post-surgery. You may initially experience some swelling and bruising, as well as dry eyes or irritation where your incisions are. These are temporary, however, if they persist or you aren’t sure if it’s something serious, please call our office. Dr. Terrasse will examine your eyes at follow-up appointments, to monitor the healing process. You will be able to return to your daily activities by about seven to ten days following your surgery. It may take about two weeks for the bruising and swelling to fade completely, but any residual bruising can be covered with makeup or with the use of a laser to speed its resolution.

Blepharoplasty results are considered permanent, though you may notice changes later on as you continue to age naturally. Caring for your eyes and using sunscreen will help maintain your results as well.

If you are suffering from eyelids that droop, causing you to look older or more tired than you feel, or even obstructing your vision, Terrasse Aesthetic Surgery can help. Call our office today at 847-234-2400 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Terrasse.
