IPL Photofacial

Facial blemishes in the form of dark spots or redness are concerning and annoying. These types of issues often occur because of sun exposure over the years or because of genetic influences. Broken capillaries can create facial redness, and uneven skin tones happen when the sun over-stimulates the skin’s melanocyte production, increasing melanin levels. These issues are difficult to conceal with makeup alone, and can potentially worsen if not treated early. If you have facial blemishes that are difficult to accept, there’s no need to worry. It’s possible to reverse these cosmetic concerns with an IPL photofacial.

IPL photofacial is a revolutionary cosmetic procedure that utilizes light energy to restore the skin. In one short treatment session, your skin can look and feel far better by ridding it of dark spots, sunspots, broken capillaries and redness. To schedule an IPL photofacial consultation, please contact Terrasse Aesthetic Surgery and ERASE MediSpa at 847-234-2400 or visit our contact page.

What Is IPL Photofacial?

IPL (intense pulsed light) photofacial is a noninvasive treatment that emits a broad spectrum of light wavelengths in brief pulses. When the IPL device introduces these light pulses to an unwanted sunspot or age spot, they are absorbed by the pigments and shatter the excess melanocytes. For broken or raised capillaries, the light pulses destroy the unhealthy blood vessels by heating them. In addition, because the treatment heats the deeper layers of skin, it stimulates the body’s natural production of collagen, a crucial structural protein that maintains its firmness and elasticity. The treatment is highly successful and poses no risk to surrounding skin tissues.

Who Is a Good IPL Photofacial Candidate?

IPL photofacials are versatile, with the potential to erase blemishes found on the face, hands, legs, arms and chest. The treatment is excellent for men or women with concerns in any of these areas. However, the treatment isn’t advisable for patients with darker skin tones because the treatment targets melanin, making it potentially harmful for skin tones that naturally possess more melanin. Patients with an active skin infection, recent sunburn or tan, light sensitivity or who use certain medications are also advised not to have an IPL photofacial.

During an initial consultation, we can assess your skin’s quality and determine if IPL photofacial is right for you. You may be a great candidate for our IPL photofacial if you have any of the following:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage
  • Enlarged pores
  • Skin elasticity
  • Acne or acne scars
  • Sunspots
  • Freckles
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Age spots
  • Broken capillaries
  • Rosacea
  • Telangiectasia

The IPL Photofacial Procedure

To begin, the treatment area is cleansed,  protective eyewear is worn throughout the procedure to ensure safety.

Once the treatment area is prepared, the IPL device is run along your skin’s surface in a grid-like pattern, emitting pulses of light energy in the process. In some cases, the device may be held in one spot for an extended period to maximize its effects. You may experience a slight pricking sensation during your IPL photofacial treatment, but this is generally tolerable. If desired, you may request a numbing agent be applied to the skin. The entire IPL photofacial treatment usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

IPL Photofacial Recovery and Results

After the session, your skin may be pinker and swollen. This is a natural reaction to the procedure and doesn’t last longer than one day. Ice packs or a cooling washcloth can be applied to the treated area to help mitigate discomfort. You’ll be able to return to normal activities immediately after the procedure. Over the next several days, brown, freckled spots called “peppering” will start to appear on the surface of your skin. These are the destroyed pigments and will gradually fade away after one week, revealing a fresh and vibrant complexion.

We recommend scheduling three IPL photofacials to achieve optimal results, but you’ll notice improvements after just one session. While IPL photofacial successfully corrects cosmetic issues associated with hyperpigmentation and broken capillaries, these issues can reappear if you do not take appropriate care of your skin. Patients are encouraged to maintain healthy habits, such as avoiding prolonged sun exposure, and a daily skincare routine including skin beaching agents may be recommended to maintain the results for as long as possible.
